Blessed Chiara Badano: The 18-year-old whose faith continues to inspire
George Kommattam - October 2026
Chiara Luce Badano was just 18 when she died. Yet her life continues to inspire young people around the world. Her story is not about how long she lived, but how she chose to live, even in the face of suffering.
Born on October 29, 1971, in Sassello, Italy, Chiara was a cheerful young girl who enjoyed tennis, swimming, music and dancing. She also cared deeply for others, sharing her favourite toys with children in need, visiting the elderly and helping sick classmates.
At nine, she joined the Focolare Movement, a Catholic movement that encourages people to live the Gospel through love and unity. Her involvement helped her grow in faith and develop a closer relationship with Jesus.
When Chiara was 16, Focolare founder Chiara Lubich gave her the name “Luce,” meaning “Light” in Italian. The name reflected the joy and love for Jesus that others recognised in her.
Soon after, Chiara was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The illness brought pain and uncertainty, but she tried to face it with courage and trust in God.
“If this is what You want, Jesus, so do I,” she is remembered as saying.
As her condition worsened, Chiara continued to think of others. She encouraged her family and friends, offered her suffering to Jesus and gave her savings to support missionary work. Her faith did not take away her pain, but it gave her strength to face it.
Chiara died on October 7, 1990, at the age of 18. Her life and faith had touched many people in her community. On September 25, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, recognising her example of Christian holiness.
For young people today, Chiara's story offers a simple message: a life does not have to be long to make a lasting difference.
Her example reminds us that faith can be expressed through ordinary acts of kindness, care for those who suffer and the courage to remain hopeful during difficult times.
Blessed Chiara Luce Badano's life continues to remind the Church that holiness can grow in everyday choices. Even in the midst of suffering, a life rooted in love can become a light for others.
And, eventually, a Rosary in his hands.
