St Padre Pio’s Simple Tips for Attending Holy Mssa
George Kommattam - May 2025
Padre Pio was a Catholic priest and saint from Italy who lived a life of deep prayer and sacrifice. He bore the five wounds of Jesus, known as the stigmata, and became known throughout the world for his holiness, humility, and love for the Eucharist.
Serving faithfully in his monastery in Pietrelcina and later in San Giovanni Rotondo, he spent long hours celebrating Holy Mass and hearing confessions, guiding countless souls closer to God.
For Padre Pio, the Holy Mass was the center of Christian life, and in 1915 he wrote simple spiritual advice teaching ordinary believers how to attend Mass with reverence, devotion, and love for Jesus.
Here are the few simple trips that will make your mass truly holy.
Enter the church in silence and with respect.
Take holy water and make the sign of the cross slowly.
Genuflect devoutly before the Blessed Sacrament.
Kneel and offer Jesus your presence.
Tell Him your needs and pray for others.
Speak to Him with childlike trust.
Be calm when standing, kneeling, and sitting.
Perform every act with devotion.
Keep your eyes modest.
Do not look around to see who enters or leaves.
Do not laugh.
Do not speak unless necessary or for charity.
Say prayers clearly and do not hurry.
Behave so others are inspired to pray.
Ask Jesus for His blessing and forgiveness before leaving.
Leave the church quietly and peacefully.
