Walk to church, keep cell phone away: Bishop’s Christmas message
George Kommattam - December 2025
A Catholic bishop in Kerala, southern India, has appealed to his people to walk to their parish churches, observe weekly one-hour cell phone fasts as part of adopting an environmentally responsible lifestyle
“Care for the Earth is a moral and spiritual responsibility,” asserted Bishop James Anaparambil of Alleppey in his Christmas message to his faithful.
The Latin rite prelate also urged them to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute actively to the protection of nature.
The diocese had earlier decided to minimize carbon emissions as part of its preparation for its platinum jubilee in 2026.
For this, a diocesan-level Green Mission Council has already begun to coordinate and promote eco-friendly initiatives.
In his message, the 63-year-old bishop encouraged families to care for the Earth as they attend to their soul’s wellbeing.
He told them to walk or cycle to public places, especially churches, whenever possible, and to rely more on public transportation, such as buses and trains.
He wants them to mark special occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries and personal achievements, by planting saplings, if space is available.
Bishop Anaparambil also called on the faithful to participate in nature conservation initiatives organized by the Church, government agencies and non-governmental organizations.
The message stressed the need to collect and dispose of plastic waste through systems such as the Haritha Karma Sena (Green Action Army), and to make churches, cemeteries, and home surroundings plastic-free.
The diocese also discouraged the use of plastic and thermocol for decorations in churches, institutions and homes.
Attention was also drawn to the need to prevent noise pollution during church festivals and public events. The diocese advised the faithful to regulate the consumption of fast food and junk food, and to choose reusable items when giving gifts.
Addressing lifestyle habits, the bishop urged the believers to reduce excessive mobile phone use. He suggested switching off mobile phones for at least one hour a week and using that time for family conversations or social interaction.
The message also called for greater concern for the poor and the sick through visits and acts of assistance.
The faithful were further exhorted to abstain from alcohol and intoxicants and to take part in awareness programs aimed at combating substance abuse, underscoring the link between personal discipline, social responsibility and care for creation.
