America witnesses a new surge in catholic conversions
KCO Staff - November 2025
New York City is witnessing a remarkable wave of conversions to the Catholic Church, echoing a nationwide trend of renewed faith. According to the New York Post, several parishes have seen their Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) sign-ups multiply, with St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village tripling its numbers to around 130, and St. Vincent Ferrer on the Upper East Side nearly doubling to 90. The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral also saw its numbers double to about 100. In Brooklyn, the diocese welcomed 538 new adult members in 2024, almost twice as many as the previous year.
Many of these new Catholics pointed to the assassination of Charlie Kirk as a turning point, with his outspoken advocacy for faith resonating deeply. This surge is part of a broader movement, as Catholic churches across the country report more young people seeking spiritual grounding. In a city known for its secularism, the influx of seekers - many with little prior religious experience - highlights a hunger for meaning and stability in turbulent times.
Some are drawn by a desire to find purpose beyond the noise of politics. The U.S. bishops, meeting in Baltimore, acknowledged this groundswell during their annual assembly, with Bishop Andrew Cozzens of Crookston, Minnesota, sharing that his diocese welcomed its largest OCIA class in two decades, and a show of hands among bishops revealed that many dioceses are experiencing similar growth.
