Age Is Not a Bar for Faith: A 100-Year-Old Man Receives Baptism and First Communion
Staff Writer - December 2025
At 100 years of age, José Francisco showed the world a quiet but powerful truth: it is never too late to follow a dream of faith.
In the small town of A-dos-Francos in Portugal, José received three sacraments on the same day- Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. The celebration took place in his parish church and was led by Father João de Brito, with the support of the Parish of Caldas da Rainha. For José, it was the end of a wait that lasted a full century.
José Francisco was born and raised in A-dos-Francos. He spent his entire life working in agriculture, rising early and laboring long hours in the fields. He married, raised a family, and became the father of seven children - six daughters and one son. Although José himself was never baptized, he made sure all his children received the sacrament. His faith was real, but unfinished.
For many years, José carried a quiet regret in his heart. Life was hard, work was demanding, and time always seemed to run out. The sacraments were postponed again and again, until the years passed and the opportunity seemed lost. At 100 years old, José believed it was no longer worth trying.
That changed this summer.
Through an initiative by the Rotary Community Development Center of Caldas da Rainha and the Academy of Dreams, José took part in a special activity for seniors. Using 360-degree virtual-reality glasses, he experienced moments designed to bring joy and connection to older adults who spend much of their time alone.
José “attended” a dance through virtual reality. The experience deeply moved him. For a moment, he stepped beyond the walls of the room where he spends most of his days and felt connected again to life and memory.
During a conversation with the team, José spoke openly about a regret he had carried for decades: never being baptized. He explained how exhaustion, poverty, and the demands of rural life kept him from receiving the sacraments. Now, at his age, he felt it was too late.
The response he received was simple but strong: “It’s never too late to fulfill a dream.”
Encouraged by these words, and with the support of the parish community, José began preparing for the sacraments. Soon after, the long-awaited day arrived.
One detail made the celebration even more meaningful. The towel used during José’s Baptism was handmade by his wife many years ago. It had already been used for the baptisms of their children. In this way, the family’s faith story came full circle.
In an interview with Jornal das Caldas, José described the day with gratitude and joy. “It was very beautiful,” he said. “I liked everything. And my next dream is to turn 101 on March 4th.”
José Francisco’s story is a gentle reminder to the church and the world: faith has no age limit, and grace patiently waits for every open heart. (Source:churchpop.com)
