Youth Have a New Saint in Heaven: Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati
George Kommattam - September 2025
The Church has a new saint, and his story is one that speaks directly to the hearts of young people today. Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, whose canonization has been celebrated by millions around the world, is now a powerful example of faith, service, and joy for the youth of all nations, including Kerala.
Born in Italy in 1901, Pier Giorgio was not only known for his love of mountaineering but, more importantly, for his deep commitment to helping the poor and the sick. Despite coming from a well-off family, he lived a life of simplicity and compassion, always putting the needs of others before his own. He spent much of his free time assisting the poor in his city, often giving away his own money, food, and belongings without hesitation. He would even take food from his own table to share with the homeless. For Pier Giorgio, this was not just charity-it was an expression of his faith in Christ.
Saint Pier Giorgio’s life wasn’t free from struggles. He faced misunderstandings from his family, challenges in his studies, and doubts in his own spiritual life. Yet, through it all, he remained steadfast in his commitment to serve and love others. His spirituality was deeply personal, often struggling with prayer but finding strength in small acts of kindness and devotion.
What makes his story particularly powerful for young people today is his focus on living a life of purpose, not fame. He didn't seek recognition for his deeds; rather, he quietly served others, seeing Christ in each person he helped. Despite his short life—he died at just 24 from polio—his legacy is vast. He demonstrated that holiness is not about being perfect, but about seeking God through every challenge and every act of service.
Saint Pier Giorgio also believed in the importance of joy. His friends often described him as cheerful, full of life, and always ready to help. His motto, "Verso l’alto", meaning “to the heights,” wasn’t just about reaching physical peaks-it was about striving for holiness and spiritual growth. His life reminds us that true elevation is found in serving others with love and joy.
Today, as Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati is honored as a saint, his example calls to young people everywhere to live lives of compassion, humility, and service. His story is a powerful reminder that greatness is found not in accolades, but in the way we love and care for those around us. As young people in Kerala and across the world seek direction, they can look to Saint Pier Giorgio as a model of how to live a life filled with purpose, faith, and love.
Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!
